Wetlands Initiative, Inc - Goose Farm Nutrient Pond Initiative

Illinois River

Klingner provided design services for a 1,200 acre wetland restoration project to be used as an experimental nutrient farming pilot project. The design (survey, planning, preliminary, final) included two pump stations with a combined capacity of over 160,000 gpm.; 10 miles of earthen berms (over soft foundation materials) in order to divide the wetland cells and isolate them from the Illinois River; and gravity flow control structures, spillways, access roads, small pumping stations, and bridge crossings. Because of the remote setting and the wet / swampy conditions, several alternative design concepts were formulated and cost estimates were provided.

Project partners include the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD), The Nature Conservancy, the U.S. EPA, and researchers from ten institutions, including Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Illinois.
