Impressive Protection Along the Mississippi

The Sny Island Levee Drainage District is the largest levee and drainage district in the Upper Mississippi River Basin – and needed a remarkable pumping capacity to protect its 110,000 acres. Klingner designed two supplemental pumping stations to support drainage and combat changing hydraulic conditions.

  • Klingner’s water resources engineers analyzed a full range of head conditions, designed the intake channel, and completed Section 408 permitting.
  • The structural engineering team designed the sump structure and pump houses with the finished floor elevations more than 3’ above the 500-year flood. These structures not only support the 58” and 72” pumps, but also the 2,000HP diesel engines.
  • MEP helped the District select diesel pumps that added nearly 700,000 GPM total capacity to the District’s pumping capacity as well as worked on appurtenant equipment selections.
  • Surveying collected all bathymetric and topographic data required for the project.
  • Geotechnical completed a series of soil borings to provide proper construction recommendations.

These new pumps increase both pumping efficiency and capacity for the District to meet the challenges of a changing Mississippi River.

Reducing Operational Costs

Smart design is why Klingner’s clients save over the long term. In fact, Klingner’s designs for new pump stations and pump station conversions have achieved up to 50% operational cost savings versus conventional designs. To deliver the most efficient station possible, we have pioneered a syphonic pumping system. This unique design establishes a natural siphon that draws water from the watershed – and reduces energy costs. Combined with quality equipment selection and features such as automated control systems, our team can maximize operational savings for years to come.
