Project Summary
Hagel 1891 is a casual restaurant that was developed by Dot Foods, Inc. as an anchor in the Mt. Sterling Main Street Revitalization Plan.
During the restoration of this longtime hardware and furniture store, Klingner’s architects carefully balanced modern functional needs with the building’s natural historic flair to create a small town Americana style. All brick outside and inside of the restaurant was cleaned and tuckpointed using a mortar mixture and color consistent with the original masonry work. Hagel 1891’s original cast iron store front system was restored to preserve the building’s memorable exterior and support a new insulated glass facade. The building’s pressed tin cornices were also restored to match the detailing and profile of the building.
Substantial work was done to prepare the building shell for a modern commercial kitchen, including the replacement of the roof and all major interior building systems. Klingner also designed a sound absorbing system for a second floor banquet hall by installing a rubber membrane barrier below the subfloor.
