Meet Alexandra “Alex” Mellon, EI, the newest member of our Structural Team!
Q: Tell us a bit about yourself…
Alex: I have my Masters in Civil Engineering from Missouri University of Science & Technology. I am married, and we have one son, Eli, and two cats. I have worked in the structural engineering field for three years. Originally, I’m from Cairo, MO, and I enjoy fishing, camping, sports, and reading.
Q: Why did you want to become an engineer?
Alex: I have always liked building things and learning how things work.
Q: Is there a project you’ve worked on thus far in your career that you’re proudest of?
Alex: I worked on a project that had deficiencies in the original structural design (done by a different firm). It took a lot of creative and unconventional fixes, but we were able to get the building structurally sound and maintain the architectural design.
Q: What piece of advice would you give someone choosing the same career?
Alex: I would recommend getting a variety of experiences around the engineering and construction fields. There are so many different things you can do within the field; it will help you decide what you want to do within your career.
Q: What is your thinking “go-to” when you’re working on a tough problem?
Alex: I will typically try to clearly lay out the problem and then break it down into questions. Going step-by-step helps to focus.
Q: Why did you decide to join the Klingner team?
Alex: When we moved back to the Quincy area, everyone that I spoke with who had experiences working with Klingner had nothing but really good things to say about them and their work ethic.
Q: What is the most daring thing you’ve ever done?
Alex: I did one of those “sling shot” rides near the ocean, where they put you in a round wheel and then they pull it down and let it go.
