Jenna Niemann, NCIDQ, AKBD — an interior designer for local firm Klingner & Associates, P.C. (Klingner) — was announced the winner of global commercial flooring manufacturer Armstrong Flooring’s “See the Possibilities” national design contest this February. Niemann was selected for her innovative flooring design at Lincoln-Douglas Elementary School.

The first of five new elementary schools in Quincy, IL, Lincoln-Douglas established a playful wayfinding system with bold primary and secondary colors. These hues were assigned to each grade along with basic shapes, then incorporated into a vinyl composition tile (VCT) floor striping system that guides students throughout the school to classroom pods and common areas. Niemann’s wayfinding design was judged on creativity, practicality, and visual appeal by a five-person panel that included fashion designer Candice Held.

“[Niemann] captured the right balance of energy, creativity, and safety — three elements of design that are critical for a productive learning environment,” Armstrong Flooring’s design team said in a statement. “She used our VCT products in an innovative way, and extrapolated the floor design to every surface of the school resulting in a comprehensive and powerful finished product.”

Competing entries included designs for healthcare, education, retail, hospitality, and office spaces. As the Grand Prize winner, Niemann will receive a trip to Palm Springs, CA. Niemann has been an interior designer for Klingner since 2012. She is registered in Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Quincy University and an Associates Degree in Interior Design from St. Louis Community College.
