The City of Fort Madison has been recognized as a 2022 All-Star Community by the Iowa League of Cities for its Historic Santa Fe Depot Renovation project.
This Klingner-designed renovation protected and restored the Santa Fe train depot, which served Fort Madison from 1910-1968, so it could once again welcome passengers to the City. The project was broken into four phases: the raising of all buildings above the 500-year flood level, the raising of the site to the new elevation, renovation of the station’s interior, and construction of a 1,000 SF passenger platform.
The All-Star Community Award is the most prestigious honor awarded by the Iowa League of Cities. Entries are judged by a panel of former city officials and others familiar with municipal government. Judges determine winners based on innovative efforts in areas such as urban renewal, development, preservation, collaborative efforts or quality of life improvements. Fort Madison was among three of Iowa’s 940 cities to garner such recognition.
Fort Madison was recognized at the Iowa League of Cities’ Awards Banquet in Waterloo, IA, in September.
