Heather Olson

“My goal is to create a place people are excited to call home.

Evidence-based design, finish material and furniture selections – all of it plays a big part in creating the comforting and safe atmosphere your residents and their families expect.”

New Assisted Living Facility in Knoxville

This 32-unit facility offers a restful setting with a mix of single bedrooms and studio units. The finished facility promotes a high quality of life for all residents.

  • Classic interior design aesthetics help residents adapt swiftly to their new home.
  • Careful architectural floor plans support the staff’s day-to-day operations, simplify wayfinding, and improve security.
  • Site development engineers created an accessible drop-off and interior courtyard for resident enjoyment.

It’s also structured with a separate seven-unit Dementia Special Care section, which accommodates the elevated care needs of these residents.

Understanding Your Requirements

Residential care facilities have unique requirements — and our team knows them. Klingner has worked with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), the Iowa Department of Inspection and Appeals (DIA), and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) on a continual basis.

During design, we reference the following codes and standards:

  • Department of Heathcare & Family Services – Supportive Living Facilities Codes
  • IDPH – Illinois Assisted Living and Shared Housing Establishment Code, Skilled Nursing and Intermediate Care Facilities Codes
  • DHSS – Missouri Residential Care Facility I & II, Assisted Living Facility I & II, Intermediate Care Facility, Skilled Nursing Facility, Adult Day Care Facility
  • Iowa DIA – Residential Care Facility, Nursing Facility, Assisted Living Facility (including dementia-specific)

Klingner also holds expertise in numerous Senior Care codes, housing standards, and building and safety codes, such as 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design and Illinois Accessibility Code 2018 (most recent Edition).

Securing Your Space

Safety is planned. The architects at Klingner pay close attention to security concerns by maximizing visibility in nurses stations and work areas; utilizing door controls for delayed egress, access control, and exit access locking; installing alarms on doors, when applicable; and creating enclosed outdoor spaces for patients with dementia.
