Summer internships run mid-May thru mid-August. Other seasonal internships are also available upon request and depend on mentor availability.

Salary Range: $18-$22
Salaries may vary based on experience and qualifications. The listed ranges are typical.

Water / Wastewater Engineer Internship

 

Locations: TBD
Semesters: Summer 2025

Responsibilities

  • Assist engineers on tasks for water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
  • Learn how to review designs, plans, specifications, permitting, and final construction documents for water distribution systems, pumping stations, sewer collection systems, lift stations, storm water systems, and water / wastewater treatment plants.
  • Learn about various environmental impacts, technologies, and system efficiencies that promote sustainable design.
  • Gain work experience in the preparation of Preliminary Engineering Reports, opinions of probable construction cost, and all other necessary reports and estimates.
  • Shadow our engineers as they complete tasks that are compliant with all applicable Local, State, and Federal regulations concerning water quality, water treatment, public health, and environmental protection.

Qualifications

  • A current student in an accredited university on track to earn a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or closely-related engineering field from an accredited university, at minimum. A Master of Science degree is desirable.
  • Ability to thrive and work well in a team-oriented environment.
  • Self-motivated, self-starting individual with great interpersonal skills, and a strong work ethic.
  • Great written and communication skills.
  • Critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze and resolve problems.
  • Experience in Civil3D, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word, WaterCAD, WaterGEMS, and Revit is a plus.
  • A drive to work by quality standards and Klingner procedures, with a strong focus on accuracy and quality of work.
  • Great willingness to learn and a desire to work in a team environment.

Architectural Internship

Locations: Burlington, IA
Semesters: Summer 2025

Responsibilities

  • Learn about and possibly assist in design development, working with drawings in Revit and/or AutoCAD.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks to successfully complete projects.

Qualifications

  • A current student in an accredited university on track to earn a Bachelor of Science in Civil, Architectural, or Agricultural Engineering, specializing in structures.
  • Ability to thrive and work well in a team-oriented environment.
  • Self-motivated, self-starting individual with great interpersonal skills and a strong work ethic.
  • Great written and communication skills.
  • Critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze and resolve problems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Autodesk Revit is preferred.
  • A drive to work by quality standards and Klingner procedures, with a strong focus on accuracy and quality of work.
  • Great willingness to learn and a desire to work in a team environment.

Structural Engineer Internship

Locations: Columbia, MO; Pella, IA; or Quincy, IL
Semesters: Summer 2025

Responsibilities

  • Assist our engineers in the structural design and detailing of a wide range of gravity and lateral structural building systems utilizing concrete, masonry, steel, and wood / timber.
  • Learn and collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients as part of Klingner’s design processes.
  • Assist engineers in conducting structural assessments and evaluations of structures to determine their safety, durability, and compliance with applicable codes.
  • Learn and work within various industry software and tools to assist engineers perform structural analysis, detailing and modeling.

  • A current student in an accredited university on track to earn a Bachelor of Science in Civil, Architectural, or Agricultural Engineering, specializing in structures.
  • Ability to thrive and work well in a team-oriented environment.

Mechanical / Electrical / Plumbing Engineer Internship

Locations: Burlington, IA
Semesters: Summer 2025

Responsibilities

  • Assist MEP engineers with creation and development of detailed mechanical, electrical, and plumbing system designs for a wide variety of projects.
  • Learn about relevant codes and standards MEP engineers apply in every day design.
  • Review and assist engineers with edits of construction documents.
  • Join our MEP engineers and learn as they collaborate in a team environment in various projects.
  • Use good written and verbal communication skills coupled with strong organizational skills in all tasks assigned.
  • Assist MEP engineers in taking field measurements, and assist with field site inspections.

Qualifications

  • A current student in an accredited university on track to earn a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. A Master of Science degree is desirable.
  • Ability to thrive and work well in a team-oriented environment.
  • Self-motivated, self-starting individual with great interpersonal skills and a strong work ethic.
  • Great written and communication skills.
  • Critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze and resolve problems.
  • Experience or familiarity with Revit is preferred.
  • A drive to work by quality standards and Klingner procedures, with a strong focus on accuracy and quality of work.
  • Great willingness to learn and a desire to work in a team environment.
