Klingner Staff Mentor Local Engineering Interests

Bryan Bross, PE and Amanda Patterson, EIT spent a couple of hours on February 22nd, at Burlington High School with “Project Lead the Way” (PLTW) students designing and building gum drop & spaghetti stick towers. The point of the exercise was to get local engineers involved with young students wanting to pursue engineering careers. Out of fourteen teams with about four students per team, Bryan’s team came in second place with 152cm height. Amanda’s team came in fifth place with 108cm. The maximum height reached during the competition was 165cm. Teams were allowed 30 minutes for design time and 30 minutes for construction. The benefit of the exercise was to teach high school students the value of good design, but also that engineering is fun. (Photos shown below: Bryan’s 2nd Place Team)
